2005 Rules & Interpretation
From Al Blau 11/03/05 |
Question: Team A player takes a shot and the shot hits the goalie in the chest and goes straight up into the air. When the ball comes down it hits A2 attack player (who is standing just outside the crease). Without A2 gaining possession the ball now goes out of bounds. Should the shot be treated as a shot or awarded to Team B because of the ball going out-of-bounds off Team A player?
Ruling: This is standard shot procedure. Since A2 did not gain possession and the ball went directly out-of-bounds, the ball is awarded to the team whose player was closest to the ball when it went out-of-bounds.

Situation: Team A is clearing the ball and crosses the midfield line into their attack half of the field. A was clearly offside. Player A1 has the ball checked out of his stick by B1 and now the officials see the offside. Because the ball was loose at the time the whistle blew, there was a question as to where the restart should be.
Ruling: The ball should have been restarted with B having possession on their attack half of the field by the X.
Note: Remember that both officials should not be going with the ball. Since the Lead has the 10-second count, the Trail should have been on the midfield line checking for the offside. Had this been done the whistle would have blown immediately and the ball awarded correctly.
Situation: Team A clears the ball into their attack half of the field. B1 checks A1 and the ball becomes loose. A play-on is called against Team B and eventually the whistle blows ending the play. Immediately the officials see a player from Team B run off the field and after counting, they now see that Team B had too many men on the field.
Ruling: Since the play-on (like a flag) denotes possession, Team B will be down a man for 30-seconds. Remember, that had Team B not had too many men on the field, the ball would have just been awarded to Team A and the teams would have played even.

Rules & Interpretations
- There have been some questions regarding the restart procedure to follow when there is a live ball followed by a dead ball foul. This can be found on P 84 Rule 7 (Dead-Ball Fouls), 7.5 Situation A, which states B1 and A1 serve nonreleasable one minute penalties and the ball is awarded to Team B in its offensive side of the field at the Center Face-off X'.
- Length of String . This Ruling is found on P. 13 Section 1-8 Crosse Prohibitions . The Ruling specifically states that Any strings or leathers are limited to a hanging length of 6 inches'. It is not a penalty the first time. The player is informed to cut the strings or leathers to the proper length. If the player does not comply and it discovered that the strings or leathers were not cut to conform to specifications the player serves a 1-minute nonreleasable penalty.
Illegal Equipment -
- The penalty for a deep pocket is a 1-minute nonreleasable penalty.
- P. 75 Rule 5.4 Situation C During the game, an official inspects the equipment of a player and finds that the longitudinal weaving of the crosse is not firmly attached to bottom edge of the throat-stop construction. Ruling: Crosse, if adjusted, may return to the game, and a 1-minute nonreleasable penalty must be served.
- Mercy Rule Situation . During a game in which the Mercy Rule was in effect, Team A, who was losing had the ball in their attack half of the field and was slashed. The flag was thrown, then with seconds left in the period, A1 shot and scored. This goal did not have an effect on the Mercy Rule situation. The officials on the game thought that by waiting until the period was over Team A would still retain possession. Ruling: There is always a face-off whenever a goal is scored unless there is a penalty following the scoring of the goal.
- Extra Man Situation Page 25, Rule 4-5 Art. 7 Note: When the ball is in flight (pass) as the period ends during an extra man situation, the team who threw the pass is ruled to have been in possession during the flight of the ball provided the ball is caught by a teammate. The team will now have possession to start the next period.
- Extra Man Situation Team A is up a man as the period is coming to a close. A1 takes a shot, and before the ball goes out of bounds, the period comes to an end. Ruling: Since the ball is loose when the period came to an end there will be a face-off beginning the next quarter.

P. 80 *6.5 Situation N. During the face-off, but before possession is gained, A1 pushes B1 who is attempting to secure the ground ball, in B's defensive side of the field. Official awards the ball to B at the spot of the infraction.
Ignore the RULING as it is written in the Rule Book. The Interpretation is to award the ball at the spot of the infraction.

Situation: If the goalie loses any equipment or breaks his crosse ANYWHERE on the field the whistle is to blow immediately. If the goalie has possession he keeps possession, he puts on the lost equipment then the play is restarted.
If he loses a piece of equipment and the ball is loose the whistle blows, the goalie puts on his equipment, the ball is awarded according to A.P. and the goalie is given a 5-second count. At the end of the 5-second count, no matter where he is on the field, the whistle blows to restart play.
