LACROSSE HELPFUL HINTS
Areas of Responsibility
One of the most common mistakes that we make as lacrosse officials is that
we often watch the ball too much and do not put our heads on a swivel. We should be
watching our area of the field as well as the man with the ball.
The lead official has the responsibility of calling any goals but he does
not have have the responsibility of what happens to the shooter after the shot is taken.
This is the responsibility of the trail official. The lead official's chief responsibility
is to see if a goal is scored and if there is any crease violation after the shot is
taken. It is the trail official's responsibility to watch what happens to the shooter
after the shot is taken. How many times do we hear coaches wanting to know why there was
not a penalty on the defenseman who was covering the shooter for a late hit or for an
illegal body check where the defenseman finished a legal check up around the shooter's
head. It's missed because both officials are watching the ball being shot, neglecting the
shooter. This can be overcome by keeping your head on a swivel and, as the trail official
watching the shooter after the shot has been taken.
