2010 Crease Interpretation
Question: Can a defenseman enter the crease without the game stopping.
Interpretation: There is no rule in the book that says differently. A defenseman can enter the crease without the game stopping. However, he does not have the privileges of the goalie. The officials should recommend to the coaches that the defensemen or any other player stay out of the crease.

Equipment:
– There is a product on the market known as the Gait Cork Butt End that fits into bottom of the shaft that, once hammered in, cannot be removed. There is a plastic donut at the end which makes the circumference of the shaft greater than 3 1/2”.
For the 2010 season this is legal and will be looked at for next season. However, if there are taped donuts either at the butt end or somewhere on the shaft, the player is to leave the field and remove the tape. If he does not and is seen to still have the taped donut the penalty is 1-min. unsportsmanlike conduct.
Restarts:
Situation:
Flag is thrown in the offensive half on B1. Al brings the ball into the goal area, shoots, and the ball misses the goal and goes out of bounds over the end line. The whistle blows ending the play. Either team calls a time- out or not.
The restart begins laterally outside the goal area.
Reasoning: In the NFHS, once the ball passes the plane of the goal after the flag has been thrown, the whistle blows immediately stopping play. The official does not wait for the ball to go out of bounds.

Situation #1: Team A shoots and ball rebounds of the goalie landing outside the crease. The goalie is trying to gain possession but A gains possession and shoots the ball toward the goal. B1 defenseman jumps into the goal to block the shot.
Situation #2: Goalie B1 clears the ball after making a save. While running upfield he loses possession of the ball and A1 picks it up breaking for the cage. B2 defenseman jumps into the crease attempting a save.
Ruling: Legal play. There is nothing in the rule book that states a defenseman cannot enter the goal to stop a shot. Coaches should, however, discourage players from doing this However it is NOT a violation in any way and would not cause a stoppage in play.
What would stop play is that the required equipment of the goal keeper is dislodged or broken including the goalie’s crosse.
See page 44, Rule 4-27, Article 7 and on Page 60 Rule 6-5, Situations D, E, and F.
Situation: During a face-off, player A is clamping down on the ball and is able to swing around and press his elbow into the mesh of his stick pressing down on it.
Ruling: Legal as long as his opponent’s crosse is not underneath his. Otherwise, official blows his whistle, and the call is interference. If this is repeated it can become and unsportsmanlike conduct foul.
